About The Hermitage on Mount Alvernia

The Hermitage is a small stone monastery built in 1939 by Monsignor John Hawes, known on Cat Island as Father Jerome. It stands on 206-foot Mount Alvernia, the highest point in The Bahamas. A steep stone stairway passes Father Jerome's carved Stations of the Cross before reaching the hilltop structure and broad views across Cat Island.
